Fire Commissioner - Kevan D. Jess
The role of providing province-wide guidance, assistance and coordination for the province’s fire and search and rescue sectors rests with the Office of the Fire Commissioner.
Kevan Jess has taken on the role of Acting Fire Commissioner, along with continuing to serve as Provincial Fire Administrator, upon the retirement of Fire Commissioner Spence Sample on July 31, 2017 to a world of grandchildren, farm, cars and honey bees.
Starting as a volunteer firefighter in Westlock, Alberta while operating the regional recreation system, Kevan has just completed his thirty-fifth year in the fire service. In 1990 he came to work as a Regional Fire Service Advisor for the Fire Prevention Branch of Alberta Labour working out of the Lethbridge office. In 2007 Kevan moved to Edmonton with the creation of the Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) and served as the Manager of Provincial Operations and Assistant Fire Commissioner for AEMA until accepting the position of Provincial Fire Administrator with the Public Safety Division of Alberta Municipal Affairs in 2009 where he has been responsible for administering the development, interpretation and application of the Alberta Fire Code, the Safety Codes Act and related standards.
During this time Kevan has attained most available NFPA professional fire service qualifications and is certified as a Level 2 Fire Inspector and Investigator by the Safety Codes Council.
Kevan looks forward to working with a recently filled complement of Regional Technical Advisors, his other colleagues in the Public Safety Division and Alberta’s fire, safety and SAR associations and services in their continuing roles of making and keeping Alberta as a safe place to live, work and play. This includes continuing to work across government with other ministries to best serve Albertans.
